Spirituality vs Christianity |
Spirituality can be defined as the seeking of meaning for our humanity
and our existence, the desire to grow in our spirits. As such, we need
to distinguish it and recognize it as a part of Christianity, rather
than equal to Christianity. The murky merging of the two can lead many
Christians to disappointments.
Spirituality in this general sense, of seeking meaning and
understanding, would naturally allow their place in different cultures,
nations, and religions, at different times and eras, and show itself as
wisdom for living.
Often, Christians who do not recognize the distinction between
spirituality and Christianity would make the following faulty logical
conclusion:
- Christianity is the only true Way
- so it should be the only true spirituality
- when we find the 2nd statement to be not true, as many other cultures and religions offer genuine wisdom and meaning in living.
- then we start to doubt the 1st statement, that Christianity is the only true Way.
I have seen this very common among Christians who do not humble
themselves, and arrogantly tread on other cultures and religions
without any understanding. When they start to realize the tremendous
amount of wisdom within these other people, they do not know what to
believe anymore.'
